At TheBlueChipRoom, we shine a light on rising stars shaping the future of African contemporary art and few embody bold vision and purpose quite like Lindelwa Matsebula.
Born in Mbabane, Eswatini in 1999, Lindelwa’s journey with art began almost as soon as he could hold a pencil. By age three, he was already turning lines into stories — a rare early spark that would later ignite into a full-fledged artistic career.
But like many artists on the rise, Lindelwa’s path wasn’t a straight one. He initially pursued civil engineering — a practical choice, but not a passion. That changed when he made the courageous decision to leave the field and commit fully to his art. Today, he creates from August House in Johannesburg, a vibrant hub of African artistic innovation.
From Mentorship to Mastery
Lindelwa’s creative journey has been shaped by the guidance of seasoned Swazi artists. Under the mentorship of Lucky Mlotsa, a revered name in Eswatini’s art circles, he refined his voice and vision. Later, working alongside renowned contemporary artist Mbongeni Fakudze, he deepened his conceptual and curatorial skills — even co-producing major commissioned works and contributing to Fakudze’s solo exhibition at Keyes Art Mile in 2022.
This spirit of collaboration continues to influence his work, positioning Lindelwa as both a student of tradition and a leader in contemporary expression.
Art With Purpose
But Lindelwa’s impact stretches far beyond the studio. Between 2018 and 2019, he volunteered with the Nhlakanipho Foundation, where he taught over 150 children the fundamentals of drawing and painting. For him, art isn’t just aesthetic — it’s a tool for empowerment, healing, and community transformation.
His belief in the social power of art is evident in every brushstroke.
A Name on the Rise
With exhibitions across Southern Africa, including the standout Contra Fair show Unmasking the Tomorrow in Johannesburg, Lindelwa’s work is drawing growing attention. He’s been awarded Outstanding Fine Artist in Eswatini, completed corporate commissions for Eswatini Royal Insurance, and been featured in major national newspapers.
Each exhibition, each award, each mural — they all tell the story of a young artist on the cusp of something big.
“Every piece is an invitation to reflect, to feel, to question,” Lindelwa says. “Art should live beyond the moment you see it.”
And his work does exactly that — it lingers, it challenges, it moves.
Why Collectors Should Pay Attention
Lindelwa Matsebula embodies the rare intersection of raw talent, technical depth, and social consciousness — qualities that define tomorrow’s blue-chip artists. With an expanding exhibition record, high-profile collaborations, and a clear artistic ethos, he’s quickly becoming a strong emerging name in the world of investment-grade African art.
As global interest in contemporary African voices continues to grow, artists like Lindelwa aren’t just participating in the conversation — they’re shaping it.
